Aberdeen Township
Aberdeen Township was initially settled by Lenni Lenape Native Americans as early as the year 1,000, until European occupation forced the villagers westward. It is now home to 18,210 residents as part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area's economy by emphasizing the traditional downtowns, residential neighborhoods, maritime history, and natural environment of the Raritan Bay coastline. It stretches 5.4 square miles and contains a mix of residential, light industry and shopping centers. Aberdeen Township is part of the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District, together with the neighboring community of Matawan.
Asbury Park
The City of Asbury Park is located in Monmouth County on the Jersey Shore. With a population of 16,930 residents, Asbury Park is considered a mecca for musicians, particularly for a subgenre of rock and roll known as the Jersey Shore sound, which is infused with R&B. It is home to The Stone Pony, founded in 1974, and a starting point for many performers such as Bruce Springsteen. The total area of Asbury Park is 1.6 square miles.
Atlantic Highlands
The Borough of Atlantic Highlands is located in the Bayshore Region of Monmouth County. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 4,705. The town shows a focus on maintaining the traditional downtowns, dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history and the natural beauty of the Raritan Bayshore coastline. The total area of Atlantic Highlands is 4.5 square miles.
Colts Neck
The Township of Colts Neck is a suburb in Monmouth County and holds a population of 12,331 residents. Many people choose to move to Colts Neck due to its open space , proximity to the Jersey Shore, New York City and Philadelphia. It is also a desirable location because of town ordinances which have long kept out urban sprawl and chain retailers, allowing for locally owned businesses, while still being close to malls, movie theaters, and other amenities in neighboring communities. The total area of Colts Neck is 32.1 square miles.
Fair Haven
The Borough of Fair Haven is a located along the Navesink River with a population of 5,937 and a total area of 1.7 square miles. Fair Haven's first permanent settlement dates to a structure built in 1816 at the Navesink River near today's Fair Haven Road. By the mid-19th century, steamboats stopped at "Chandler's Dock" on a route between Red Bank and New York City, bringing visitors to the area and local oysters to the city.
Farmingdale
The Borough of Farmingdale has a land area of 0.5 square miles and is located in the south-central portion of the county, completely surrounded by Howell Township. Farmindale has a diverse industrial history for such a small borough, thanks mostly to its role as a hub for freight rail lines. Today, Farmingdale retains its small town character with a population of 1,604, well-maintained homes on small lots and a commercial district serving the needs of the neighborhood.
Freehold
Freehold is a Township in Monmouth County with a substantial population of 31,537. First settled in 1650, Freehold is one of the original townships of Monmouth County. It has always been the county seat, and from 1715 to 1801 Freehold was simply called “Monmouth Courthouse." Freehold enjoys a past that is rich in American Revolution History. Visitors to Freehold can hike, horseback ride or picnic on the grounds of Monmouth Battlefield, the 18th century landscape of fields, woods and orchards where one of the largest battles of the Revolutionary War took place.
Hazlet
The Township of Hazlet is located in Monmouth County with a population of approximately 22,000 and a total area of 5.7 square miles. Route 35, Route 36 and the Garden State Parkway all provide easy access to the Jersey Shore and city destinations. Hazlet has a quality public school system as well as a variety of recreational areas and activities for children, adults and seniors.
Highlands
Located in Monmouth County, the Borough of Highlands has a population of 5,097 and a total area of 1.3 square miles. Located within the borders of the Raritan Bay, Atlantic Ocean and the Shrewsbury River, Highlands has a unique feel that other towns cannot match! Highlands boasts luxurious estates along its mountainous landscape as well as homes closer to sea level. There are many condominium complexes and high rise buildings overlooking the bay and ocean.
Holmdel
Holmdel Township is a rural suburban community located in Central New Jersey, covering 17.9 square miles. Its population is estimated to be 14,000. Holmdel is home to several parks and recreational areas, and, notably, the PNC Arts Center. Holmdel real estate is the best around, selling at a median price of $829,000. The many condominium complexes are great for commuters' being minutes away from all transportation. Attention all you beach lovers...Holmdel homes are a short driving distance from the beach, marinas and Sandy Hook State Park!
Howell
The Township of Howell, located in south-central Monmouth County, has a land area of 62.10 square miles, making it the largest municipality in the county with a population of 52,400. Residential development in this area began in the 1960’s and has exploded in recent decades, as has commercial development along Route 9. With access to Route 9, Route 195 and the Garden State Parkway, this centrally located municipality is one of the fastest growing townships in Monmouth County today. Open space remains, though, thanks to actively farmed lands, the Howell Park golf coruse and the Manasquan Reservoir park.
Keyport
Keyport borders the boroughs of Keansburg (via maritime boundary), Union Beach, and the townships of Aberdeen and Hazlet. Home to many diverse businesses, the bustling shopping district of West Front Street is located one block in from the waterfront and hosts barber shops, cafes, municipal buildings, office spaces, nightlife and dining. Residents enjoy the close proximity to famed ocean beaches of the Jersey Shore and swift commuter access via bus, train, ferry or major roadways.
Little Silver
The Borough of Little Silver is located in Monmouth County holding a population of 6,170 with a total area of 3.4 square miles. The borough has had a varied history as a resort, agricultural area and fishing town. Today, the municipality is primarily residential with a range of housing types, from ranches and capes.
Long Branch
The City of Long Branch holds a population of 33,066, has a land area of 5.10 square miles and is located in the north coast area of the county. The Elberon section of Long Branch, nicknamed the Newport of the Jersey Shore at the turn of the century, is still known for its grand Victorian and Gothic architecture. Long Branch contains the most varied range of housing types of any town in the county, including single-family homes, oceanfront high-rise condominiums, townhomes and apartments. In recent years there has been large-scale redevelopment in Long Branch’s oceanfront area. The city has received designation as an Urban Enterprise Zone from the state of New Jersey, which provides incentives to local businesses and their customers.
Manalapan
The name Manalapan is derived from a word in the Lenape language, meaning either "land of good bread", "good land to settle upon" or "good bread". Manalapan was the site of The Battle of Monmouth (1778), when General George Washington attacked the rear of the British Army as they left Monmouth Court House (modern Freehold Borough). Today, Manalapan is the quintessential family town, showcasing every variability of real estate imaginable. From equine to agriculture, mega-mansions to rustic retreats, the 30-square mile township sits just outside both Monmouth and Ocean County's finest amenities.
Marlboro
Marlboro Township has a land area of 30.31 square miles and is located in western Monmouth County, on the border of Middlesex County. Today, Marlboro is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the county holding a population of 41,535, accomodating a range of land uses including offices, retail and service enterprises, light industrial, and, of course, housing. Marlboro’s housing stock includes estate homes scattered on large lots, post-war and recent single family residential subdivisions, and higher density townhomes.
Matawan
Matawan is a popular commuter town and is idyllically sited on the outskirts of Monmouth County's shore epicenter of Red Bank. Settled initially by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, the current community was established by Dutch settlers in the 17th century. Part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area's economy, Matawan emphasizes traditional downtowns, dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history, and the natural beauty of the Raritan Bayshore coastline. Matawan is part of the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District, which also serves students from the neighboring community of Aberdeen Township.
Middletown
Middletown Township has a land area of 41.08 square miles and has frontage on Sandy Hook Bay and the Navesink River. Middletown has a rich history, and was one of the very first settlements in New Jersey. Because of its large size and central location, Middletown has evolved into an extremely diverse community, with a balance of residential, commercial and industrial uses. Navesink River Road, running high above the Navesink River, is one of the most visually stunning roads in the county. Middletown is also home to Brookdale, Monmouth County’s Community College. The population of Middletown is 69,166.
Monmouth Beach
The Borough of Monmouth Beach has a land area of 1.1 square miles and is located on a barrier split of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Shrewsbury River in the north coast area of the county. Originally developed as a resort community, Monmouth Beach is now filled with 3,655 year-round residents who are attracted to the town by the waterfront and harbor facilities. Monmouth Beach’s location between the Shrewsbury River and the sea gives this town the advantage of being about ten degrees cooler than the rest of the county in the summer.
Ocean Grove
Ocean Grove abuts the rapidly rising Asbury Park and is touted as New Jersey's finest year-round family seashore resort. One square mile of natural beauty has welcomed and delighted vacationers for over a century through tree-lined streets. With the largest assemblage of authentic Victorian architecture in the nation, the town was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Though the population swells in the summer months, Ocean Grove is “open for business” 365 days a year, with over 3000 year-round residents.
Ocean Township
Ocean Township has a land area of 11.2 square miles and is located in eastern Monmouth County. Most of Ocean Township’s housing stock developed during the post-World War II housing boom, but it also includes apartments, townhouses and condominium complexes. Commercial activity in the township is concentrated along the corridors of Route 35 and Route 71. Several major highways pass through Ocean Township, making it a convenient place to live. The population of Ocean Township is 28,884.
Oceanport
The Borough of Oceanport has a land area of 3.10 square miles and is located in the eastern part of Monmouth County, at the head of the Shrewsbury River. Prior to the extension of rail lines through Monmouth County, Oceanport played an important role in the shipping of local harvests to New York. Now, Oceanport is a predominantly residential community, with many waterfront homes and a population of 5,868. Residents enjoy the Shrewsbury River for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. Oceanport is also home to the U.S. Army’s Fort Monmouth and the Monmouth Park Race Track, one of the most beautiful thoroughbred tracks in the country.
Red Bank
Situated on the banks of Monmouth County's beautiful Navesink River, the Borough of Red Bank has an area of 1.75 square miles and is approximately five miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The current population is estimated to be approximately 11,876. Boating, sculling, sailing, and fishing are popular outdoor activities in Red Bank; in the winter, ice boats sail on the frozen Navesink. Alongside Asbury Park and Long Branch the town is considered to be one of the three artistic communities of the Jersey Shore. The community is often compared to New York City's Soho and Greenwich Village.
Rumson
The Borough of Rumson is located in Monmouth County, with a population of 7,137 and a total area of 7.2 square miles. Here you can enjoy the beautiful beaches just over the Sea Bright Bridge and also take a quick commuter ferry to downtown New York City. Rumson has always been a very affluent area and is still one of the wealthiest towns in New Jersey. Rumson homes are large and exquisite and sometimes situated on the waterfront.
Sea Bright
The Borough of Sea Bright has a land area of 0.6 square miles and is located on a sliver of land between the Shrewsbury River and the Atlantic Ocean, just south of Sandy Hook. The major industry of Sea Bright shifted from fishing to tourism with the completion of the now-defunct Long Branch Railroad. Today, Sea Bright has a variety of housing types, nearly all of which have waterfront views, and a small commercial district. Private beach clubs dominate Sea Bright’s oceanfront, and marinas dot the riverfront.
Sea Girt
Sea Girt is blessed with small town charm, rural beauty, and a rich community life with an abundance of recreational activities enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Shrewsbury Boro
The Borough of Shrewsbury is located in Monmouth County with a population of 1,098 residents. Settled in 1662, Shrewsbury is one of the two towns that reside on the Navesink River. Two main roads running through Shrewsbury, Broad Street and Sycamore Avenue, maintain a significant historical importance within Monmouth County. Shrewsbury consists of approximately 2.3 square miles and is primarily a residential community.
Shrewsbury Township
Shrewsbury Township, the county’s smallest municipality, has a land area of 0.09 square miles and is located in eastern Monmouth County. The township is unique in that all of the dwelling units in the township are part of the same residential development, made up of multi-family cooperative and condominium units. These dwellings were created from housing at Camp Vail (Fort Monmouth) just after World War II. Shrewsbury Township has a population of 1,098.

Tinton Falls
The Borough of Tinton Falls is located in Monmouth County with a population of 15,053 and a total area of 15.6 square miles. Union Beach

Upper Freehold
Upper Freehold Township has a land area of 47.45 square miles and is located in the extreme western area of Monmouth County, bordering Mercer, Burlington and Ocean Counties. By the 18th Century, the area had attracted many farmers, establishing an agricultural character which persists today. Thanks to the efforts of state and county farmland preservation programs, Upper Freehold Township’s viable farming industry will continue to flourish. The population of Upper Freehold Township is 7,026.
West Long Branch
The Borough of West Long Branch is located in Monmouth County, seventy miles South of New York City, two miles from the New Jersey Shore, and sixty miles North of Atlantic City. The Borough holds a population of 8,258 and a total area of 2.9 square miles. West Long Branch is proximate to many other historical communities, public parks, and recreation sites.
